Improve your Health: Become a Volunteer!

New Year’s resolutions usually send people into crowded gyms and the produce section of the grocery store, but Serenity HospiceCare offers an enjoyable alternative to promote good health – volunteerism.

A new survey by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Giving and Getting Back: Volunteering in America, shows that whether contributing to your community or supporting a cause, volunteering has positive effects on health. 

“Our volunteers consistently tell me volunteering for hospice makes them happy and gives them a purpose,” said Jessica Mell, volunteer manager at Serenity HospiceCare. “They meet new friends through our meetings and being out in the community, and they like that volunteer work keeps them active.”

The nationwide survey of 1,022 adults reveals that volunteering can expand your social circle, enhance your relationships, encourage physical activity and even improve your love life. Nearly 90 percent of those polled, who have volunteered in the past year, say it has been good for their social life.

Mell said volunteers are needed in all eight counties of Serenity HospiceCare’s service area, especially Madison, Iron and Perry counties.

“We are always looking for more volunteers,” said Mell. “The support they provide is priceless, and we want to continue expanding our volunteer base to help more of our patients and increase the kinds of volunteer services we offer.”

Specific areas of need include people who are willing to do simple errands for patients such as shopping or light cleaning, licensed beauticians to provide patients with haircuts as needed, and musicians or singers who want to share their talents with patients.
