Since 1989, Serenity HospiceCare had a vision of providing the best in end-of-life care to those who needed it. What they didn’t know at the time was that hospice would not be the only service they would provide to the community in the years to come.
They knew there were others in the community who were in need of support. Children - in particular, grieving children - were in great need of someone to help them understand and work through painful feelings and emotions that surrounded a loss. They felt it was critical to provide a community resource that could address those needs.
In 2008, the Director of Bereavement Services researched children’s grief resources in our area. Though there were multiple opportunities for grieving adults to find help, nothing existed - beyond what the schools were able to offer - that focused on how to help children grieve. As a result, the focus was on creating a grief support group for children.
When considering a name for the new program, staff didn’t need to look far for inspiration.
In 2005, a Serenity HospiceCare nurse experienced a parent’s worst nightmare when her five- month-old son, Carter, died suddenly. Carter’s big brother was eight years old at the time and witnessed the tragedy. Finding resources that would help him with his unique grief issues proved to be frustrating and disappointing for the family.
Years later, when Serenity’s children’s grief program was created, it was named Carter’s Clubhouse, after five-month-old Carter. Today, it remains a place where grieving children can share their experiences with other children who have similar stories.
Children participate in many activities at Carter’s Clubhouse, including story-telling, letter writing, drama, art, music and crafts all of which are techniques used to help children express their grief through behavior and play. Led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Carter’s Clubhouse is proud to be a nationally-recognized, award-winning program.
Carter’s Clubhouse meetings are held on the first Monday of every month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The group meets at the Serenity HospiceCare office. Please enroll prior to attending meetings by calling 573-701-2504.
